President Trump imposed 25% tariffs on all imported steel and aluminum.

The new order includes a rule requiring foreign steel to be “melted and poured” and for aluminum to be “smelted and cast” within North America. The measure aimed at curbing imports of minimally processed Chinese steel.

Designed to promote greater domestic steel industry production and employment, the metals tariffs will increase costs for manufacturers that use the industrial metals to produce goods such as automobiles and appliances.

The news comes days after Trump placed — and temporarily suspended — 25% tariffs on all imports from Canada and Mexico.

His new 10% tariff on goods from China remains in place.
