Canada’s new retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods took effect today, including a 50% duty on fastener code 7318 (screws, bolts, nuts, rivets, washers).
The measures took effect at 12:01 a.m. Sept. 8 and cover about $27.6 billion worth of U.S. imports. The tariffs are part of Canada’s response to new U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian goods last month.
It appears the countermeasures may be based on U.S. origin under the CUSMA country-of-origin marking rules, not necessarily the country from which the shipment is exported.
Nearly half of all metal fastener imports to Canada come from the U.S. In 2025, Canadian imports from the U.S. for iron or steel screws, bolts, nuts, coach screws, rivets, and washers totaled US$895.6 million.
